He highlights the early adoption of the decimal place-value system and the Chinese mastery of what would later be known in the West as Pascal’s Triangle, binomial coefficients, and the solution of higher-order numerical equations. The work emphasizes a distinct mathematical philosophy: while Greek mathematics was often rooted in geometry and deductive logic, Chinese mathematics was predominantly algebraic and computational, focusing on algorithms and patterns of number.

The Sciences of the Heavens: Astronomy and Meteorology

The central portion of the volume is dedicated to astronomy, a field of paramount importance in traditional China due to the emperor’s role as the mediator between Heaven and Earth. Needham details the polar and equatorial character of Chinese astronomy, contrasting it with the ecliptic focus of the Hellenistic world. He documents the history of star catalogues—some of the oldest in existence—and the development of sophisticated observational instruments such as the armillary sphere and the water-driven astronomical clock of Su Song. The author also explores how the Chinese recorded celestial phenomena with a continuity and precision that remains useful to modern astronomers, including early observations of sunspots, novae, and the passage of Halley’s Comet. Meteorology is also addressed, focusing on the systematic measurement of rainfall and the interpretation of atmospheric phenomena within a symbolic and political context.

The Sciences of the Earth: Geography, Geology, and Seismology

The final section of the work investigates how the Chinese mapped and interpreted the physical landscape. This includes a history of cartography, where Needham identifies the early use of a rectangular grid system for mapping—a technique that predated similar Western developments by centuries. He further examines geological insights, such as the recognition of fossils as the remains of ancient life and the understanding of the hydrological cycle. The work also covers the pioneering field of seismology, specifically the invention of the world’s first seismograph by Zhang Heng in the 2nd century CE, which could detect and indicate the direction of distant earthquakes.

Historical and Cultural Context

Published in 1959, Science and Civilisation in China, Volume 3 was written during a time when the prevailing Western narrative often dismissed non-European cultures as having contributed little to the history of science. Joseph Needham, a biochemist by training and a polymath by nature, sought to challenge this Eurocentric bias. His work was fueled by what has become known as the “Needham Question”: Why did modern science, as it is understood today, develop in Europe and not in China, despite China’s earlier and more advanced technological and scientific start?

This contrasted with the mechanical, clockwork universe model that dominated Western thought following the Scientific Revolution.
