Science, therefore, does not grow by accumulating certainties, but by the bold proposal of “conjectures” followed by rigorous attempts at their “refutation.”

A significant portion of the work is dedicated to the psychological and social dimensions of belief. Popper examines how human beings often fall into the trap of seeking only confirmation for their existing worldviews. He specifically critiques systems of thought like Marxism and Freudian psychoanalysis, which he argues are structured in such a way that they can interpret any event or behavior as a confirmation of their own truth. This intellectual flexibility, Popper suggests, is not a strength but a weakness that removes these systems from the realm of empirical science. By contrast, a scientific attitude involves a willingness to abandon a theory when it fails to withstand critical tests.

For Popper, the “growth of knowledge” is essentially an evolutionary process where ideas undergo a struggle for survival. Karl Popper (1902–1994) was an Austrian-British philosopher who fled the rise of the National Socialist regime in the 1930s, eventually settling in the United Kingdom. Conjectures and Refutations emerged during the mid-20th century, a period marked by intense ideological conflict and the rapid advancement of modern physics. Popper’s ideas were heavily influenced by his observation of two very different intellectual events: the widespread social influence of political and psychological dogmas in Europe, and the 1919 eclipse expedition that tested Albert Einstein’s Theory of General Relativity.

While the dogmatic systems of his time appeared to explain everything and could never be proven wrong by their followers, Einstein’s theory was different because it made a risky prediction. If the observations of the eclipse had not shown the bending of light by gravity, Einstein’s theory would have been refuted. This contrast became the foundation of Popper’s critical rationalism. His work provided a robust defense of open inquiry and a challenge to the totalizing narratives that dominated the Cold War era. Culturally, Popper helped shift the understanding of science from a repository of absolute truths to a dynamic, ongoing process of trial and error, a view that remains deeply influential in modern epistemology and public discourse.
