The central thesis of the work is the concept of the “mental model.” Craik explores the idea that the brain does not merely react to external stimuli in a linear fashion, but rather constructs small-scale, internal models of reality. These models allow an organism to simulate possible future actions, predict outcomes, and explain the relationships between different events in the environment.

The work examines several key themes that laid the groundwork for modern computational theories of mind:

  • The Brain as a Calculating Machine: Writing at the dawn of the computer age, Craik was one of the first to propose that the nervous system functions as a biological calculating machine. He argues that the brain has the capacity to represent the physical world through a process of symbols and relations that parallel the actual structure of external events.
  • The Internal Model Hypothesis: The author suggests that thinking involves three distinct stages. First, an external process is translated into internal symbols (words, numbers, or mental imagery). Second, these symbols are manipulated through a process of reasoning or calculation. Third, the results of this internal manipulation are re-translated into physical actions or predictions about the future. This allows for a “mental trial and error” that is far safer and more efficient than physical trial and error.
  • The Nature of Explanation: Craik investigates what it actually means to “explain” something. He proposes that explanation is essentially the process of describing a complex event in terms of a simpler, more familiar model. If we can map the unfamiliar onto a model whose rules we already understand, we feel that the event has been explained. This perspective bridges the gap between subjective understanding and objective physical processes.
  • Symbolic Representation: The work explores how the mind uses symbols—not just as linguistic tools, but as functional representations that maintain the same “structural relation” to the world as the things they represent. Published in 1943, The Nature of Explanation appeared during a period of profound intellectual transition. At the time, the dominant school of psychology in the English-speaking world was Behaviorism, which largely ignored internal mental states in favor of observable stimulus-response patterns. Craik’s work was a bold departure from this consensus, reintroducing the “black box” of the mind as a legitimate and necessary subject of scientific inquiry.

The work was written during the Second World War, a time when the development of radar, anti-aircraft systems, and early calculating machines was beginning to show the power of automated feedback and control systems. Craik himself was involved in research on human factors in military technology, which likely influenced his view of the brain as a sophisticated control system. Tragically, Kenneth Craik died in a cycling accident in 1945 at the age of 31, shortly after the book’s publication. Despite his early death and the brevity of this single volume, his ideas survived and became a cornerstone for the field of Cybernetics in the late 1940s and the Cognitive Revolution of the 1950s and 60s.
